1981 TT 250 questions

Post by Kr1st0ff » Mon Jun 23, 2014 11:38 pm

A friend of mine was selling his 1981 TT 250 for really cheap so I went for it.

It has been sitting for a few years. Last registered in 2008 so at least 4 years. I want to try and start it up but I don't know what steps to take before hand.

Also I want to try for dual registration. Is this even possible with this bike? I live in California. I know I have to get all the lights for it, but I heard that the power output isn't powerful enough for legal street use...

Hope to hear good news from you guys!

2 of the 1st things I do is make sure the gas tank is clean and I always take the carb of and clean it. I would certainly check the brakes and crank case oil. Those would be most important that I can think of at the moment. Then there are others also..air filter, cables, tires for dry rot , etc, etc... Nice find by the way. Good luck.[ok]

Does the bike have spark?[ok]

If so- just lots of cleaning and she should fire up.

that bike may or may not slide under the radar. you will have to get all the proper DMV and CHP paper work along with an inspection..here is what they will be looking for.

http://www.chp.ca.gov/publications/pdf/chp888.pdf

this may get ya

"All motorcycles manufactured and first registered after January 1, 1971, shall be equipped so all taillamps when turned on, will remain lighted automatically for a period of at least 15 minutes if the engine stops."

use wire up DOT lights and a keyed switch straight to a freshly charged battery in your air box or where ever you may be able to strap it to the frame [dunno]

it will also need turn signals since it is pose '73

good luck

It aint gonna happen....I know the DMV registration system here in California fairly well.

You will not be able to register for street use....green sticker only.

1978 and later M/C require an emission sticker from the manufacturer on the bike. That bike was never legal for street use in Cali. so your out of luck.

Listen to this guy.. I deal with the DMV a bit but I am sure he does it way more than me.

I almost forgot '78 is basically the cut off

[doh] Well thanks for all the input guys! You've definitely saved me some time and money. I guess I'll just get her running and put her up for sale :(
Any clue how much I'd get for it?

Yes sir! Titled and registered till 2016 Green Sticker.

I started her up today, but it was only a few seconds at a time. She wouldn't stay on. I guess I have to clean the carb [dunno] Where can I find a rebuild kit?

the title and sticker puts you ahead of most others selling old bikes [ok]

I really dont know its real value..last few I have seen were in pretty bad shape with no titles. Had I not just bought my BSA I would have made a serious offer on it. The TT250 is on my list of want to own trail bikes for sure.
