Day 3

Post by drew0512 » Sun May 22, 2011 8:42 am

Friday morning after coffee and a yummy breakfast bar, I loaded up my trusty steed and pushed on towards Mortimer, NC (a little over an hours drive through the mountains).

Getting close to Mortimer, I entered the Wilson Creek Recreation Area. This is where the pavement ends!

Day 3 Con't

I passed this interesting looking spot where an old mill or factory had been built on the flood plan along Wilson Creek.

and then I arrived, downtown Mortimer, NC!!!

The TeePee and the backside of the bath house as well as the "King's Table" as the proprietor refers to his picnic table. You can see the worn, brown spot in the grass were he usually is stationed in his motorized chair.

Day 3 Con't

Post by drew0512 » Sun May 22, 2011 12:13 pm

I arrived at Betsy's Old Country Store about an hour before Kenny did. I unloaded the bike and decided to back track and check out those old concrete remains.

the story goes, the water in Wilson Creek was so clean that back in the 20's they built this cotton mill to mill cotton flax for linen cloth. they had this great flood in the early 30's that wiped out the mill and the railroad they built to haul in the cotton and haul out the finished product. after the flood they never rebuilt the mill or the railroad. you can still spot the railroad trestle piers here and there along the creek.

I couldn't believe how many fly fishermen i saw, then i stopped on the bridge and looked down to see several nice trout waiting to ambush the next tasty thing to swim by. Kenny and I saw several below another bridge also. This is obviously a very good fishing creek judging by the huge number of fishermen.
