You're right! Best source was right here all along!
I just got off the phone with Yamaha Product Specialist in CA. They verified it as a '71 and will be sending me a letter attesting to that so I can get it registered as the proper year.

Thank you again for all your help.

Also noticed my pics didn't post....; apparently the file exceeded limits

No matter what anyone else tells you....your bike is a 1973 DT3.
The last serial number we list here for a 1973 is DT1F-162633
your serial number DT1F-163112. is just simply slightly beyond the range we have listed but is in the correct sequence

There is more cumulative knowledge regarding these bikes than anywhere else on the planet!!!

Your bike is a 1973 ....end of story !

Are you responding to the right individual? Now I'm really confused! I'm deLing with an RT1 which is clearly indicated on the frame? DT1 never even mentioned in my post.

RT1 - I was confused...I was responding to Goldberg's post as you posted in his thread.

I see your original post #18...and as Enduronut posted you have a 1971 RT1,
sorry for the confusion my mistake.

Carry on !

Scared me... Was beginning to think I bought a "frankenbike"
Yamaha confirmed my VIN directly and it confirmed what I was told here.
