Default JT2 Fork Dampers

During my recent rebuild I added a small spring to the bottom of the 2nd fork leg on the JT2 and is has helped by making the forks pretty springy. I noticed there is no dampening on these forks. Presumably that means the oil and air combination is the only method, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Is it possible to add damping rods or cartridges? Normally, heavier oil can help, but since there is nothing for it to flow through, I can't imagine it will make any difference.
