Default 1974 dt 250 needing tlc southern mn

Just picked up a '74 dt 250 with a messy fuel system. Tank is now clean and most rust is cleaned up, my question is where to get a carb kit. Everyone lists a 1975 but not 1974.

Will it work? are they the same jet wise?

Thanks for the forum and any help/word of wisdom.

Warren, First off ...Welcome !

The 74 DT250A that you have has a VM30ss carburetor. Your carb should have the numbers on it ( somewhere !?! ) that can help us a bit more for further info to help.

The 75 DT250B carb kit is for a VM28ss carburetor.
Different size there. Sure some parts will fit...but not all.
So don't bother there.

DEET wanted you to check the Yamaha site for more info.

Probably best to start a new topic.. number means carb is original for 1974 DT250A (Yamaha model code 438).

Unless bowl gasket is torn, usually can be reused. Bowl is the same part as earlier 250's so earlier gasket should work. 75 is different. "Kit" jets are usually junk... use only Mikuni jets. Yamaha never had kits. Often a carb can be thoroughly cleaned used without buying any parts if you're careful with the bowl gasket and if starter plunger and float needle/seat is good. On your carb the one part you need to replace is the o-ring that seals the "jet setter" into the bottom of the float bowl.

Ok Mark, thanks Ill start a new thread. is the o-ring that seals the "jet setter" into the bottom of the float bowl something I could pick up at a auto parts store (i.e. match it up) or do I have to order it from somewhere online? It ran 2 summers ago so I might get lucky reusing materials from the carb.

You could get lucky... if o-ring is bad or doesn't seal right engine will run very rich.

Hey yall! I've recently purchased my first DT250! It runs, but its definitely seen it's better days (mostly cosmetically). I'm down in Spring, TX, so hopefully I'll see some of you from time to time.
